The luxury of extra time at home means added time for reading whatever I choose. \u00a0The past few days I chose Nick Kelsh’s<\/a> How to Photograph Your Life: Capturing Everyday Moments with Your Camera and Your Heart.<\/span>\u00a0 Kelsh, a professional photographer, shot all the pictures for his book with his wife’s amateur digital pocket camera. \u00a0His goal was to show her what the camera could do. \u00a0In the section “How to Photograph a Landscape,” Kelsh tells the following story.<\/p>\n

When I was in college, the great Life<\/strong>\u00a0magazine photographer Alfred Eisenstadt came to speak. \u00a0“Do you have any advice for young photographers?” one of my fellow students asked. \u00a0“Yes,” he said. \u00a0“Get out of the car.”\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“Get out of the car.” \u00a0Maybe that should be a no-brainer. \u00a0But let’s face it, sometimes getting out of the car seems inefficient, a waste of time and energy. \u00a0Sometimes getting out of the car is messy, maybe even risky. \u00a0So why do it? \u00a0Because when you get out of the car, you make the decision to become a part of the landscape, to be fully engaged. \u00a0All of your senses are gathering information and the possibilities are endless.<\/p>\n

“Get out of the car.” \u00a0What if Eisenstadt’s words aren’t just about shooting pictures? \u00a0What if those five words could launch us, fully present, into a new year? \u00a0Would we be better listeners out of the car? \u00a0Maybe standing on the landscape we would see the value in others, discover the strength in ourselves. \u00a0Maybe we would find we are capable of stepping into each day. \u00a0Choosing to be witness to our own life. \u00a0All of it. \u00a0The painful moments that threaten to paralyze us in our own fear of loss, and the moments of joy that call us to celebrate with abandon.<\/p>\n

The textbook,\u00a0The Master Student<\/span>,\u00a0presents “truths” for mastering school and life. \u00a0One of them is \u00a0“Be here now.” \u00a0Show up. \u00a0I hope the remaining 363 days of 2012 find you choosing to “get out of the car” to experience life from the landscape.<\/p>\n
